Choose a scan type

Space can scan local and network drives, network shares, and FTP accounts.

Local or network drive

Choose this option for local drives (hard drives, CDROM drives, floppy drives etc.), network drives or network shares. Space will then present a screen allowing you to choose where to start the scan from.

If you do not want to scan an entire drive, a directory can be selected as a starting point, and only that directory and any it contains will be scanned.

FTP account

Choose this option for scanning FTP servers; this can be particularly useful for checking your space usage in Web sites. The screen to the right will appear, allowing you to enter server details.

Click 'new' to create a new entry, and enter hostname, username and password. All settings are saved in the registry, so you only need to enter them once.

Search progress

Whilst scanning your drive, the screen to the right informs you of progress and totals so far.

Scan progress

If an error occurs, a dialogue box appears informing you of the type of error, and the location in which it was encountered. You can choose to:

  • Carry on with the scan, ignoring this single error.
  • Carry on with the scan, and ignore all subsequent errors of this type.
  • Try to scan the directory again.
  • Cancel the scan.

You can also stop any errors interrupting the scan, but they will always be listed in the Error Log view when the scan is complete.
